Your garage was meant for cars — or at least for something more useful than a decade's worth of stuff you don't need. If you can barely walk through yours, you're not alone. Garages across Sherman, Denison, and the Texoma area are some of the most cluttered spaces in any home. This checklist will help you take it back.
Before You Start: Assess the Situation
Before diving in, take 10 minutes to look at what you're dealing with. How bad is it? Can you handle the sorting yourself, or do you need a full professional garage cleanout? There's no shame in calling for help — we do dozens of these every month.
Step 1: Empty Everything Out
This is the hardest part, but it's essential. Pull everything out of the garage and onto the driveway. Yes, everything. You can't properly sort and organize if you're working around piles. Pick a dry day with good weather — this step takes space and time.
Step 2: Sort Into Four Piles
Create four clear zones on your driveway:
- Keep: Items you actually use at least once a year. Tools, seasonal decorations you display, sporting equipment you use.
- Sell: Items in good condition worth the effort of listing. Be realistic — if it's been sitting in your garage for 3 years, it's probably not selling.
- Donate: Usable items that aren't worth selling but can help someone else. Furniture, household items, clothing.
- Junk: Broken items, worn-out tools, damaged furniture, outdated electronics, mystery boxes of stuff you haven't opened since you moved in.

Step 3: Handle Hazardous Items Separately
Garages commonly contain items that need special disposal:
- Old paint cans (oil-based are hazardous waste)
- Pesticides and herbicides
- Motor oil and automotive fluids
- Propane tanks
- Batteries (especially car batteries)
Set these aside and check with your local municipality about hazardous waste collection days. Grayson County and Cooke County both hold periodic events.
Step 4: Deal With the "Junk" Pile
Now comes the satisfying part — getting rid of it all. You have two options: haul it yourself (multiple truck loads to the dump, dump fees, and a full day of labor) or call Texoma Waste Works. We show up, load everything, and haul it away. Most garage cleanouts in Whitesboro, Pottsboro, and surrounding areas are done in 1–2 hours.
Step 5: Clean the Empty Space
With everything out, sweep the floor, knock down cobwebs, and wipe down shelves. This is your blank canvas. If you notice any damage — cracks, water stains, pest evidence — now is the time to address it before putting things back.

Step 6: Organize What's Left
Only put back items from the "keep" pile. Use these organizing principles:
- Zone by category: Tools in one area, seasonal items in another, sporting goods together.
- Vertical storage: Use wall-mounted hooks, pegboards, and overhead racks. Floor space is premium real estate.
- Clear bins: Replace cardboard boxes with clear plastic bins so you can see contents without opening them.
- Frequently used items at arm level: Rarely used items go up high or in the back.
Step 7: Maintain It
The key to keeping a clean garage is a simple rule: one in, one out. Every time something new enters the garage, something old leaves. Schedule a mini-cleanout every six months to prevent the clutter from creeping back.
